Avène launches Hyaluron Activ B3 Concentrated Plumping Serum
Dr Sinovich was recently invited to the Avene New Zealand launch at French restaurant Origine. She spoke as an industry expert at an exclusive lunch to celebrate the French beauty company’s latest skin care collection. The Hyaluron Activ B3 collection is comprised of the Concentrated Plumping Serum, Renewal Firming Cream and Intensive Night Cream aimed at those experiencing the second stages of ageing (or when wrinkles are deeper set).
Dr Sinovich spoke about why we experience volume loss or laxity in the skin, as we age.
She explained that facial ageing is due to the accumulation of both intrinsic and extrinsic ageing. Intrinsic ageing is largely unavoidable and refers to age-related changes which are largely genetically determined. Other contributing factors include lifestyle factors such as smoking , diet, alcohol, stress and illness. Intrinsic ageing only accounts for about 10% of skin ageing.
Extrinsic ageing, which is responsible for 80% of our visible ageing, is mainly due to our cumulative sun exposure and to lesser degree air pollution and as such is often referred to as photo-ageing. Ultraviolet radiation is also the principal cause of skin cancer.
Dr Vania stressed the importance of daily broad-spectrum protection sunscreen rated SPF50 or higher along with a regular skincare routine including the ABCs of skin care.
She explained that topical Vitamin C is a great antioxidant especially in the morning as it protects the skin from oxidative damage due to environmental stresses from UV exposure and pollution, reduces uneven pigmentation, brightening the skin
Vitamin B is known as the skin's multitasker. It is a powerful antioxidant that mops up free radicals, reduces pigmentation and uneven skin tone, helps regulate oil production so is good for acne sufferers, supports the skin's immunity by boosting proteins to aid with skin's natural defences, strengthens the skins ability to act as a barrier and reduces inflammation. It is good for acne and rosacea sufferers and those with sensitive skin. It increases the production of ceramides( natural oils) in our skin making our skin look luminous.
Topical vitamin A regulates new cell production, boost collagen production, encourage cell turnover leading to the shedding of old cells, evens skin tone by reducing dark spots by inhibiting the enzyme that makes melanin, puts the break on chemicals that cause collagen breakdown, reduces oil and helps to restore cells damaged by ultraviolet rays and enhances hyaluronic acid production( which are the water sponges of the skin) resulting in healthier, firmer and glowing skin.
A good moisturiser will contain three components: an emollient to soften the skin, a humectant to draw water in and an occlusive to prevent moisture escaping.
Glycerin and hyaluronic acid are humectants, ceramides and paraffin are emollients, whilst petroleum jelly and most oils and butters are occlusives.
Avène’s Hyaluron Activ B3 range contains a proprietary blend of youth-boosting skincare ingredients including niacinamide, two forms of hyaluronic acid, and collagen-booster retinal.
Dr Sinovich spoke about the myriad benefits of these key ingredients, explaining that retinal is recognised as a skin regulator that encourages collagen production and is great for uneven skin tone and oily skin concerns.
She went on to explain that she loves niacinamide for its well tolerated multi-tasking properties, its suitability for uneven skin tone or pigmentation, reducing redness and enhancing collagen. Dr Sinovich also recommended the hydration benefits of hyaluronic acid for our skins, comparing this ingredient to a magnet for water molecules, which in turn was particularly wonderful for boosting dehydrated and ageing skin
