PRP/Regenerative Medicine

Platelet Rich Plasma therapy utilises the two key components of your own blood cells to boost your body’s healing processes, which then work to rejuvenate your skin from within.

The Skin Company uses PRP regenerative therapy to treat:

  • Collagen production

  • Boost skin laxity

  • Acne scars

  • Hyper pigmentation

  • Hair health and volume

Platelet-rich plasma injections (PRP) is a regenerative treatment that involves taking your own cells and injecting them into the area of concern, such as the scalp or skin.  This treatment works by amplifying the skin’s natural growth factors.   It encourages collagen production by triggering a wound healing response and maintains the skin’s regenerative abilities, which slow down as we age.

Plasma is the liquid portion our blood and is composed of water and proteins.  Plasma also acts as a carrier for red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets to circulate throughout the body. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are blood cells that cause clotting and other necessary growth healing functions.

Platelet activation plays an essential role in the body’s natural healing process and tissue regeneration.

FAQs

  • During this treatment, we use your own blood and a centrifugal process to spin down the blood and extract the platelet rich plasma.

Before your treatment one of our Skin Company nurses will conduct a full consultation with you to to discuss your concerns and suitability for the procedure. Following consent for the procedure, blood is taken and the treatment area is cleaned.  In some cases, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied for your comfort.

During your treatment PRP will be injected into the treatment area.  Other options for treatment may include skin needling PRP into the skin at a more surface level.  Subsequently, the PRP releases growth elements which then generate cell growth and regeneration, new blood vessel formation and the production of new collagen and elastin. This results in connective tissue formation, skin tightening and replenishment.

The procedure takes approximately 45-60 minutes. Thorough aftercare instructions will be provided following the treatment.

  • There are few side effects associated with Platelet Rich Plasma therapy and downtime is minimal.

After your treatment, there will be some redness and swelling to the area, similar to other injectable treatments. Bruising is possible due to the injection itself however this is something we expect with injectable treatments and is usually mild. Many patients can return to normal activities the day after being treated.

Following the procedure, we recommend that you protect your skin from the sun and that you use gentle moisturisers and broad spectrum sunscreen. This is a prevention measure to avoid damage to the newly forming collagen and elastin cells.

A Skin Company nurse will provide thorough after care instructions.
